BookArtsLA supports handmade books and all techniques that come together to make a book (printing, binding, papermaking, decorated paper and more)! Our outreach efforts strive to introduce the public to the broad range of artwork that goes into a book and we also encourage the public to make a book. If you're interested in discussing an outreach event, please contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Here are just a few samples of books we’ve made with the public at events such as The Los Angeles Printers Fair, California Association of Teachers of English (CATE), Antiquarian Book Fairs, and Library appreciation days.
Images above include participants at CATE making books, and participants at the Venice Library binding books and filling them with their own stories.
One of our favorite events is the BookArtsLA Annual Open House and Dia de los Muertos Celebration each fall. We open our studio to friends and the neighborhood and make paper, bind books and print on our presses. A highlight of the afternoon includes a poetry reading by Los Angeles poets.
Images include pamphlet binding, printing a custom lino cut on a press and papermaking.
We’ve also hosted special events at our studio including the Tiny Book Show, a mobile exhibition of over 300 miniature books housed inside a teardrop trailer and curated by The Creativity Caravan. Their goal is to make a book and pass it on, teach one more person to make a book.
