This one day class is a great introduction to setting and printing metal type or a refresher for those who have some experience. Participants will be able to print a six-line poem or text of their own choosing. We will discuss designing with metal type and also the finer points of typesetting, setting up type on the press, and obtaining good quality printing of your broadside. We will discuss choice of typeface and paper. Everyone will create several copies of their broadside.
What's a broadside? A broadside is a sheet of paper printed only on one side. In the 18th - 19th centuries, they were used as newspapers to announce events, government decrees and other public and commercial topics. With the transition to modern printing techniques, the broadside now often includes poetry or short texts.
You will also have the opportunity to add an illustration to your text either by choosing a block from our extensive collection of vintage blocks or we can also incorporate your own hand cut block print.
No experience necessary just an interest and love of all things literary and tactile.
Instructor Sue A. Kaplan is the proprietor of Shulamis Press and also runs Garlow Studio. See more of her work at The Garlow Studio

Come learn the ancient art of Japanese paper marbling at BookArtsLA! Suminigashi, or "floating ink," was practiced in Japan for centuries before it was adopted in the Western world. Using two sumi-e brushes, ink is distributed into a vat of water in concentric circles. As more ink is added, patterns emerge that mimic the qualities of moving water. By playing with color and different weight papers, we'll make printed papers that range from subtle to vibrant. This class is the perfect choice for those wanting to make elegant cover papers for their books or even wrapping papers for the holidays.
Afternoon Session - Sunday, December 4 from 1 pm to 4 pm

Discover the versatile and beautiful sewing known as the Coptic stitch. One of the oldest known codex forms, the Coptic stitch allows the binder to make multi-section books with either hard or soft covers.
In this Workshop, we will focus on hard covers - attaching boards and reviewing a series of finishes and options for working with different cover materials. Traditional covers range from wood to covered boards to a wide variety of options. Participants will learn several versions of the Coptic Stitch during this class using 1,2 and 4 needles. This is an intermediate class. Basic binding skills are helpful. You need not have completed Coptic Binding, Part 1 which focused on paper covers.
Saturday, December 3 from 9 am to 1 pm
Fee: $130 plus a $30 materials fee paid to the instructor. All materials and tools will be provided

The Medieval Binding
Friday, November 11 from 9 am to 5 pm
Saturday, November 12 from 9 am to 5 pm
Sunday, November 13 from 9 am to 5 pm
Fee $325 plus a $90 materials fee
The Medieval binding may be the archetypal book: heavy wooden boards, partially or fully covered in leather, prominent bands on the spine, held shut by straps terminating in metal clasps.Though the materials differ, the construction of these bindings is surprisingly similar to how a fine leather binding is made today. Paper has replaced parchment for the text block; thick, dense paper has replaced wood for the boards; and the sewing is now often done on flat supports to present a smooth spine. The sewing supports are still laced into the boards, the boards still nest into the shoulder but with a different profile, spine linings still provide support though they now stop at the edges of the spine rather than extending onto the boards to function as levers to aid in opening. Carefully formed corners are now designed to be invisible rather than merely protect, endbands are now decorative only instead of structural elements that lace into the boards. Clasps are no longer necessary to hold the book closed.
In this three-day workshop, students will construct a small book with many features typical of an early Medieval binding: Text block sewn on double supports; wooden boards shaped all around, with special attention given to the inside spine edge to match the text block’s shoulder, then laced on and pegged; sewn headbands; covered in full alum-tawed leather; strap and pin closure.
Note: this is a three-day class Friday, November through Sunday, November 13, 2016. This is a fast-paced workshop for students who already have experience with traditional binding. Students should be comfortable sewing on cords and have successfully made books on their own outside a workshop setting.
