#5041, Caterpillar Stitch Binding with Rhiannon Alpers - March 18
San Francisco artist, Rhiannon Alpers will present examples of artists' books created using the Caterpillar Stitch Binding, along with demonstrating her modifications of the binding.
The caterpillar stitch is a unique and organic binding that has hundreds of variations and
applications, which bring attention to the materials and add context to a binding. There are two very different styles of caterpillar stitches, both useful for the right book structure.
In this one day course, students will create two different leather softcover wraparound books with two lines of caterpillar stitches running around the cover to hold in the text block. Each of these bindings focuses attention on the beauty of the caterpillar wrap stitch and caterpillar braid stitch. Unlike most caterpillar bindings, the signatures in this structure are bound with the stitch through the signatures into the cover on the spine as one entity. Using handmade paper and leather for this binding gives it a natural look and draws attention to the uniqueness the structure and its materials.
Prerequisite: Some bookbinding experience in sewing and creating multiple signature books.
Sunday, March 18 from 9 am to 5 pm. There will also be an additional $35 materials fee.
