#7038 Type Slam, letterpress wood type - Mar 6 from 6 pm to 10 pm
Plan now for the March Type Slam on Friday, March 6 from 6 pm to 10 pm.
Grab your friends and join us to print one-of-a-kind posters using vintage type. No previous experience is necessary for this event; we will provide step-by-step instructions. Join us for a social evening and a chance to create your own letterpress poster.
Working with artists Lorna Turner and Janet Kupchick, up to 6 students will have the chance to create and print a letterpress image. We will be serving snacks and beverages as well as a healthy dose of typographic knowledge.
This is a fast-paced introduction to handset type and letterpress printing. Using BookArtsLA's collection of vintage wood type, each slammer will assemble a short text. With direction and input from Turner and Kupchick you'll prepare the type, learn about inking and printing using several presses. In order to complete prints for all participants in one evening, we can't accommodate special projects during the Type Slam.
Among thousands of other definitions, many listed in the Urban Dictionary, a "slam" is a spoken-word poetry contest. They are high energy and very entertaining. Modern "slam" is connected closely with rap and freestyle rap.
Note that we are limited to a maximum of 6 students.
Please wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to tie back long hair, you will be working on a press. All materials and refreshments will be provided.
